Hilton Head Island
The sand below the high-water line is public. You get on it at a Town beach park. Coligny is a great place to get your feet wet on day one, then explore from there — Burkes, Driessen, and Folly Field for the longer morning.

Beach safety — who to trust
If a lifeguard is on the stand, ask before you go in. That is the flag check. Yellow is a medium hazard, red is a high hazard, purple is stinging marine life — Shore Beach Service’s own key. Their beach page. 843-785-3494.
Town swim-area lifeguard season ended September 30. Shore Beach still patrols year-round; ask the attendant or call 843-785-3494. Next Town swim season starts April 1. Those parks, with the dune marker: Alder Lane 52A, Coligny 59A, Driessen 102, Folly Field 105, Islanders 110. Town swim areas. The Town does not print hours for the stand.
After September 30 those swim-area lifeguards come off the Town schedule. Shore Beach still patrols year-round, and chair stands run late March through late October, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Ask the attendant, or call the same number.
- South Carolina water-quality advisories (SCDES beach monitoring)
- After heavy rain, give swashes ~48 hours before you treat the water as a sure thing
The vibe
Live oaks, hard-pack sand, and a path network between the parks. The beach morning starts at a Town park — Coligny for the plaza, Burkes, Driessen, or Folly Field for the longer sit.
The sand below the high-water line is public. You reach it through a Town beach park, or through a plantation or Beach Club door you already have. Pick the park before you pick “the beach.”
On the sand
The rules that get people in trouble — Town of Hilton Head Island.
Hilton Head beach rules
- Alcohol and glass stay off the beach.
- Holes no deeper than 12 inches — fill them before you leave, and no later than 30 minutes before sunset.
- May 1–Oct 31: lights visible from the beach off or shielded 10 p.m.–6 a.m.
- Leave live beach animals and nests alone.
- Take gear with you — overnight belongings can be removed.
- No sleeping on the beach midnight–6 a.m.
- Dogs: October through March: dogs welcome anytime on Town sand — leash, or off-leash only if you can reliably control by voice. Scoop waste. Midday leash window returns April 1.
If a lifeguard is on the stand, ask about the flag before you go in. Town swim-area lifeguard season ended September 30. Shore Beach still patrols year-round; ask the attendant or call 843-785-3494. Next Town swim season starts April 1.
Town chair and umbrella rental is Shore Beach Service, late March through late October. At a staffed stand, ask the attendant on the sand, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Anywhere else on the beach, call 843-785-3494 before the day — after 11 a.m. that is usually the next day. At a stand, a day is $25 for an umbrella, $18 for a chair, or $46 for one umbrella and two chairs, tax included. After 3 p.m. those are $10, $5, and $18. Their rate sheet has the longer stays.
Off-season on Hilton Head
This is when the island feels most like itself — warm enough to use, quiet enough to breathe.
Sep–Oct · Still beach season
Water stays swimmable. Town swim-area lifeguard season ended September 30. Shore Beach still patrols year-round; ask the attendant or call 843-785-3494. Next Town swim season starts April 1. Ask the stand if one is up. Oyster season starts, and nesting-season lights-out rules still matter for turtles.
Nov–Feb · Quiet value
Quieter sand, golf and bike weather. Town swim-area lifeguards are off this stretch of the calendar. Shore Beach still patrols. Pack a layer.
Practical perks
October through March: dogs welcome anytime on Town sand — leash, or off-leash only if you can reliably control by voice. Scoop waste. Midday leash window returns April 1.

Cook it tonight
Peel-and-eat
Boil a pot of water. Salt it well, or add a handful of seafood-boil seasoning. Drop in the shrimp. Once the water returns to a boil, about 2 minutes. Done when they turn pink and curl. An ice bath if you want them cold for peeling.
Skillet shrimp
Pat the shrimp dry. Hot skillet, a spoon of butter, a crushed garlic clove. Shrimp in one layer, a couple of minutes a side, until pink and opaque in the center. Finish with lemon, salt, and black pepper. Same pan works for a thin fish fillet — skin side down first, flip when the edges turn opaque.
What first-time visitors often get wrong
- Coligny Plaza every day — that free lot fills. The next morning is Burkes, Driessen, or Folly Field
- Paying the Sea Pines gate for a beach day — gate pass is community entry; Beach Club parking is separate
- King Neptune as a must — one table among many; the list above is a solid place to start
In brief
Notes before you pack
Beach patrol
The number on the dune line
Hilton Head’s emergency markers sit on the dune line, numbered #1 at Braddock Cove (South Beach / Sea Pines) north to #134 at Fish Haul Creek, about a tenth of a mile apart. A letter after the number is a beach access, not extra distance — 59A is Coligny, between 59 and 60. Note that number when you sit down. Give it to 911, a highchair lifeguard, or a red Beach Patrol truck. Shore Beach Service patrols 13.5 miles year-round. Useful posts: 52A Alder Lane, 59A Coligny, 98 Burkes Beach, 102 Driessen, 105 Folly Field, 110 Islanders, 134 Fish Haul. Town swim zones (lifeguard / flag coverage in season) are at posts 52A, 59A, 102, 105, and 110. Lettered posts are not mile markers. Sea Pines path numbers are a different set — use the dune-line number for 911.
Animals
Dogs on Town sand — and the Fish Haul Creek zone
October through March: dogs welcome anytime on Town sand — leash, or off-leash only if you can reliably control by voice. Scoop waste. Midday leash window returns April 1. The summer hours that kept dogs off the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ended Labor Day, September 7. Burkes runs the same Town dog hours as other Town sand. Fines and court costs can run up to $1,092.50.
Sea Pines
Forest trails, not beach horses
If you came for horses in the surf, this island will disappoint you on purpose. The public ride is Lawton Stables, 190 Greenwood Drive Directions, inside gated Sea Pines: a one-hour, walk-only western trail through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve — about 605 acres of palmetto, moss oaks, and fishing lakes, dedicated in 1971. Town code is blunter: riding or driving horses on Hilton Head beaches is unlawful, except an annual marsh tacky race. Trail rides are ages 8+, about $100, reservations required; check in 30 minutes early. Kids 18 months to 7 years, 65 lb max, get led pony laps at the animal farm — helmets mandatory. Closed Sundays. Casual visitors still pay the Sea Pines $10 daily gate, in effect since March 1, 2026, at Greenwood or Ocean Gate, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Book at lawtonstables.com or 843-671-2586.
Beachcombing
Fish Haul’s sound flats, then Burkes
Skip the secret-cove hunt. The stretch that actually produces is the north-end sound: Fish Haul Beach Park, 124 Mitchelville Road, and neighboring Mitchelville, where Port Royal Sound lies in a wide low-tide flat of shell hash, oysters, and driftwood. Mid-island, Burkes Beach, 60 Burkes Beach Road, is the less-picked Atlantic public access. Wear water shoes — oyster is the local tax. Time it to low tide. Empty shells are the souvenir. Live sand dollars, starfish, occupied conchs, and any beach fauna stay put — Town code, fines up to $1,092.50. May 1 through October 31 is turtle season: nests staked, lights out 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., fill holes before you leave.
Fossils
Black fossils on the sound flats
Hilton Head’s teeth are small, black, phosphate fossils in the shell hash — the Lowcountry look — not the white “fresh” teeth gift shops sell, and not a megalodon factory. Look at Fish Haul and Mitchelville on Port Royal Sound, the same wide low-tide flats as the shelling, along the swash and darker shell beds when the tide is out. Hunting Island is a different island. A Beaufort County ranger told the Island Packet the local hotspot is Sands Beach in Port Royal — also not Hilton Head. Statewide, a “reasonable amount” of fossil teeth may be collected above the low-water mark; below that needs a hobby license. There is no sourced Hilton Head trophy find to wave around.
